Material breaches found in up to a third of Inspections since FFI (Fee for Intervention) scheme launched.

“Up to one third of Inspections carried out by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the first 4 months of its cost recovery scheme coming into force, found a material breach of health and Safety law, resulting in a fee for intervention (FFI) on the duty holders involved. The first run of invoices was initiated recently and has so far seen 1400 bills sent out to errant duty holders”. This was revealed by the HSE’s Head of Field Operations David Ashton in his presentation to the Institution for Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) conference this week.

Mr Ashton was keen to emphasise that FFI was not just about recovering money, although thanks to FFI he said HSE should be able to start recruiting more Inspectors soon. He also highlighted what he called “the multiplying effect of the scheme”. Going on to say that HSE would publish information and take cases as a result and suggested that companies should realise that if they don’t want a knock on the door from HSE followed by a bill they should act before its too late and improve their health and safety management and compliance.
